I experienced my first code yesterday. It was everything I expected and more. My heart still races thinking about it.
It was so very unexpected, I suppose they all are huh? I just happened to be right there when it all happened. Our instructor told us the 1st day that if there's a code on our floor we better be there. So when the nurse screamed "pull the code" I positioned myself in the far corner so I'd purposely get stuck in there when people came running.
I ripped the pt's goal sheet off the wall and began writing down everything that was happening and the time. (another instruction she gave us) I was tying to look busy and not obtrusive and it worked. The charge nurse saw me documenting and began asking me times and telling me information. My friend, Nelly, quickly evacuated the roommate and her bed. Then positioned herself nest to me hading equipment and helping out. We weren't in the way at all.
The code team seemed to take forever. But we were on the 7th floor and they typically don't code in this particular unit. They certainly knew their stuff. It was amazing to watch. Doctors, nurses and even the chaplain came flying in. I was in the perfect location.
One of the code nurses was inserting an IV when the AED said "Stand clear. Shock advised" she left the needle halfway in the vein, it shocked the pt and then she continued with the IV. That was really cool.
The pt woke up very agitated but ultimately made it. I still get chills thinking about it.
I never really knew what it was like to truly love a job. The things I've experienced at clinicals are absolutely amazing. The patients are wonderful and the nurses are fabulous. Most days pass so fast I don't want to leave. I can't wait until I'm a real nurse.

Wow! I had to read through this a couple times to know what happened (only having seen such on tv). I'm glad the story has a happy ending and that you're loving what you do!!
Lee (from the WTM board)
