One day last February, my kindergartner, Julia, had a substitute teacher. When I picked her up that afternoon the woman called over to the children sitting on the story rug and said, "Delilah, your mom's here." I inquired as to why she was using that name to refer to J. The teacher replied in a confused tone, "Oh! Delilah isn't her real name?" And from that point on all her classmates and teachers referred to Jules as Delilah. Every piece of school and art work had "Dalila" written across the top.
I'm not exactly sure where she had ever heard that particular name before and I have no clue why she liked it so much but Delilah she became.
Until swim team. One of the new mothers approached me and said how cute my daughter Emily was. I, of course, assumed she had mistaken me for a different parent. I quickly ran through the roster in my head and blurted out loud, "There isn't an Emily in this age group." The mother looked surprised and said, "Isn't that little girl yours," as she pointed to Julie, "She told my daughter that her name is Emily."
The other mothers thought this was hysterical and the team collectively decided to call her "Bob" for the remainder of the season.
I'm sure the rival teams at state were wondering why in the world we were chanting "Go! Bob! Go!"
I'm wonder who she'll be in first grade?!
